Finding Books On Your Topic in the Wheaton Library

ELIZA, the Library's online catalog, available from the Library Home Page, is the "key" to finding information in the Wallace Library, in all its collections. Use the web version and search by:

  1. author -- personal and institutional names
  2. title, if a particular work or periodical title is known
  3. subject heading, to search by assigned Library of Congress subject heading
  4. keyword, to combine words and to find LC Subject Headings in records
Note location and call number to locate the item on the shelf.

Finding Articles on Sociological Topics In Scholarly Journals, Magazines & News Sources

Searching in online reference databases by subject heading, subject keywords, or author will yield references, many with abstracts, to articles in journals and magazines or the full-text of the article, itself. The appropriate choice of a database and the terminology used to search within are critical to your success. The list below was selected as particularly valuable for Sociology 260. For a complete list of what is available to you, go to the Alphabetical List or Subject List of Reference Databases on the Library's "Electronic Resources" web page.

For Scholarly Articles

  • Sociofile, 1974- . (online via Ovid) Indexes and abstracts sociology journals.
  • Wilson Social Science Abstracts. 1983- . (online via Ovid) Index to major social science journals.

For News Articles (useful for ideas, current issues, and names of organizations, researchers, etc.)

  • Ethnic NewsWatch. Dates vary. (online) Full text articles from newspapers and periodicals published by the ethnic and minority press in America, some dating back to 1985.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic. Dates vary. (online) Full-text news, business, legal, and health information from newspapers, newsletters, trade journals, law reviews, and reference publications.

For Scholarly, News, and General-Interest Articles (Mixed)

  • Expanded Academic ASAP. 1980- . (online via InfoTRAC) Abstracts and some full-text articles from scholarly and general-interest publications across all disciplines.
  • GenderWatch. Dates vary. Most 1990- . (online) Full text access to a database of books, newsletters, reports, newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals representing gender issues, with emphasis on women's studies.
  • Women≠s Resources International. 1972- . (online) Indexes articles/books on subjects related to women's studies particularly from the feminist press.

Getting The Periodicals You Need

After locating bibliographic references to journal articles using online indexes/abstracts (databases) or references in books or other articles, search by title of periodical in ELIZA, the library's online catalog, to determine the availability of a particular periodical and issue in the Wallace Library, regardless of format. (You can automatically search for journal titles in ELIZA from the "Library Catalog Holdings" link in each record generated by a search in the Ovid databases.) ELIZA leads you directly to many electronic journals for full-text articles when they are available in that format. Searches in Expanded Academic ASAP (InfoTRAC), for example, often yield full-text articles.

For more detail about locating periodicals, refer to the handout, "Does Wheaton Have the Periodical I Need? Sociology", also located at www.wheatonma.edu/library/helpguides/periodical_soc.html

You can request items that you discover are not available at Wheaton through Interlibrary Loan. Use ILL-LINK from the Library Home Page's "Online Request Forms" or the direct order function within the Ovid databases.

Statistics Sources

Search by keywords women and statistics and consider limiting by "Year of Publication after 1998", in ELIZA to find books in the Library and selected websites. Do the same search in WorldCat and limit to Internet Resource for websites.
