FIRST YEAR SEMINAR: KOOKS, COMMIES, AND THE KKK: RADICAL POLITICS IN AMERICA FALL 2002Anni Baker and Jean Callaghan General Library InformationELIZA: the Library's online catalogELIZA, available from the Library's home page in telnet or web versions, is accessible from on or off campus. The catalog includes all of the Library's holdings: books, reference material, journals, electronic journals, newspapers, microforms, electronic resources, audiovisual material, music scores, interactive media, rare books and archival materials. Search ELIZA by author, title, subject [Library of Congress subject headings only] or key word to find material in the library. To locate a book in the library, you will need the call number and the location [i.e. REF, STACKS]. Search periodicals by title, or for more advanced searching, consult Search Hints for Periodicals and Electronic Journals. Periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title: 1990+ on the Periodicals Level and 1900-1989 on the Stack Level, in the compact shelving. Pre-1900 periodicals must be paged. Microforms [microfilm and microfiche] are located on the Periodicals Level in the Microform Room. Library of Congress ClassificationsThe Library uses the Library of Congress classification system. This is a subject-oriented system. A basic classification schedule is on the back of the Wallace Library Guide, which will help you to become familiar with various subject categories. The first letter (or letters) of the call number determines its subject, and its location in the Library. If a call number is preceded by "REF," the material is located in the Reference Room. All of the "N" (or Fine Arts) classifications are located on the top two levels of the Library. The main book collection (classification A to M and P to Z) is located on the Stack Level. Reference CollectionMaterial located in the Reference Room includes such sources as general and subject-specific encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, directories, bibliographies, and indexes and abstracts. This is a non-circulating collection. Indexes and abstracts are available online and/or in paper format, depending on the dates of coverage, and will help you to find articles in journals and newspapers, plus citations for books and documents. You can contact me at the Reference Desk Tuesdays 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
