Email Client Setup
If you prefer to use an email client application instead of the Wheaton College Webmail interface you have several options available.
Here is a list of available clients, some free, that you can use to access your email.
Microsoft Windows
- Microsoft Outlook 2003 (available on the Software Server)
- Microsoft Outlook Express (comes free with Internet Explorer)
- Mozilla's Thunderbird (free download at http://www.mozilla.com)
- Eudora (sponsored mode is free, pay mode has full feature set)
Macintosh OS X
- Microsoft's Entourage (available on the Software Server)
- Apple Mail Center (built into the operating system)
- Mozilla's Thunderbird (free download at http://www.mozilla.com)
- Eudora (sponsored mode is free, pay mode has full feature set)
This is by no means an exhaustive list of available applications. Once you have decided on an application you will need the following information when you configure your application.
- Username: Use your Wheaton College w ID with a lowercase w
- Password: Enter in your Webmail password here
- Outbound SMTP server: outbound.wheatonma.edu (works only from on campus)
- Inbound email server: mail2.wheatonma.edu
- Setup Type: Select POP or IMAP
Here are some helpful hints to consider during the setup of your new email application.
- The difference between the POP and IMAP protocols is POP mail messages will be moved down to your computer. The benefit is that messages no longer count against your email space quota since the messages are on your local computer. The downside is if your computer crashes you will not have access to your messages since they were downloaded to your computer. The IMAP protocol is greate because you get a consistent view of your messages within the email client application and Wheaton's Webmail and if your system crashes all of your mail is available within Webmail which is backed up nightly. The downside is that since messages live on the server you have to watch your disk space quota.
- If asked to use "SSL" when sending or receiving messages select "No". This capability is available but we are still testing it to make sure it doesn't bog down the email server.
Lastly, if you are a student that recently graduated and you want to take your email with you before your account gets removed, please follow these instructions.
