Wheaton File Services
What are File Services?
File services is a generic term used to describe a location out on the network where you can do the following....
- Backup important folders and documents from your computer
- Share files with others in your group
Note: If you are looking for your www folder please visit this web page that describes how to connect to and use your personal web space. As of June of 2007 the www folders were moved to a separate server for security and management reasons.
For individual users here is what the disk space quotas will be
- Faculty/Staff 2.5 GB per person
- Students 1.0 GB per person
- Affiliates 100 MB per person
How do I connect to File Services?
What content is appropriate for uploading to my personal file services space?
If you have a lot of data that you want to archive for a long period of time (ex: old email messages) then you are probably better off burning this data to a DVD or CDROM. Please do not try and backup your entire hard drive to this space, a better candidate would be your My Documents folder.
What will my personal file service space look like?
When you connect to the server you will see the following 4 folders.
- Affiliates
- Faculty
- Staff
- Students
Your personal folder will be underneath one of the folders listed above and your folder will be named in the format lastname_firstname. For example, I am a staff member so I would go inside the Staff folder then enter my personal folder gibson_brian.
There will be 3 top level folders inside your personal folder, they are ....
- public
- private
- dropbin
The public folder is where you can upload files/folders that other Wheaton users can see and download but cannot modify or delete.
The private folder is where you can upload files/folders that only you can access. (This is a good place to save personal data).
The dropbin folder is where other Wheaton users can upload files/folders for you but only you can see and access this data. NOTE: If someone is accessing file services from a Macintosh computer they cannot put files/folders inside your dropbin. This only works when you are connecting from a Windows computer.
As noted earlier in this page, the www folders were moved to a separate server for security and management reasons. Please visit this web page that describes how to connect to and use your personal web space.
