Poet Laureate Billy CollinsFriday at 7:30 p.m. Set off on a wide-ranging journey of the mind with Billy Collins, U.S. poet laureate from 2001 to 2003. The Jane Ruby Lecture Series presents the critically acclaimed Collins, whose work also has earned a broad popular following. He has authored seven collections of poems, and his work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The American Scholar and other publications. Collins sees his poetry as "a form of travel writing" and considers humor "a door into the serious." His poetry is a door that many thousands of readers have opened with amazement and delight. Wheaton Voices*Friday at 8:30 p.m. Listen to the Wheatones, the Whims, the Chorale and Chamber Singers, the Gentlemen Callers, and Voices United to Jam in concert. Major Connections*Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Discover how marketable a Wheaton English major is in a panel discussion with recent alumnae/i who will share how they have put their undergraduate degrees to good use. Life Transitions: The Changing Relationship with Your Adult Child*Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Learn strategies for managing this new chapter of your life in a discussion facilitated by the Filene Center for Work and Learning. The Global Classroom*Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Plus: presentations by our talented faculty, including Professor of Political Science Jay Goodman! Haas Center Room DedicationSaturday at 11 a.m. Join in a memorial celebration of the contributions of Joseph Tokarz P'99, building services worker, to all the teams and coaches who have made Haas Athletic Center their home. Alumnae/i Association Fall CelebrationSaturday at 11:30 a.m. Cheer on this year's Alumnae/i Achievement Award winners Josephine "Dody" Wilding Freeman '44, Nancy Woodruff Wheeler '45, Suzanne Vitagliano DelVecchio '64, Deirdre Houlihan DiCara '77 and Ernesto Semedo '96 at their recognition ceremony. Crutcher discusses the student experience and offers a special opportunity for families to learn about current happenings at the college. Wheaton Marketplace*Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. Stroll through the Dimple and enjoy a juried art and craft show featuring works by alumnae/i, parents, students and friends. Celebrate Latino Heritage Month*Saturday at various times Sponsored by the Latino Student Association. Dance Company Preview*Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Join the Wheaton College Dance Company as they preview works for their February performance. Molecules to Masterpieces*Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Art and science come together in a hands-on exploration of the chemistry behind frescoes. Following a talk by Professor Laura Muller, guests will be invited to roll up their sleeves and create a masterpiece of their own using this ancient technique of painting on plaster. Global Education: Its Relevance and Urgency in a Postmodern Age*Saturday at 2:30 p.m. More than ever, Americans need to be prepared to negotiate an increasingly interdependent and interconnected world. Institutions of higher education offer the last best hope to make this happen. This panel will discuss Wheaton's commitment to prepare students who are globally competent, and to make global education one of the central pillars of the academic experience. Gay Marriage: Redefining or Reaffirming an InstitutionSaturday at 3 p.m. David Wilson and Rob Campton, plaintiffs in the landmark Massachusetts Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage in the state, join moderator Becky Hemperly '88, journalist Rosy White and attorney Kerin Stackpole '84 in a panel discussion that will detail the background of the Goodridge case and its implications for the future. Prelude to a Kiss: The Preview*Saturday at 4 p.m. Actor and Assistant Professor of Theatre Stephanie Burlington '97 and her students stage a sneak preview of their production of the Tony Award-winning play by Craig Lucas.
Christopher Parkening in ConcertSaturday at 8 p.m. Parkening is celebrated as one of the world's preeminent classical guitarists. His dramatic virtuosity and eloquent musicianship have captivated audiences around the world and earned him two Grammy nominations.
