Wheaton in Rome

Profile: The IES program in Rome began in Spring 2003 in affiliation with the Universita di Roma (1 & 3). The program also offers students interested in the arts access to courses at Rome University of Fine Arts (RUFA). Students from beginner to advanced Italian language skills can live and learn in both the ancient and modern city of Rome.

Location: The city of Rome is a unique location for students to study. It offers an amazing span of history of 2,500 years. It is home to such sites at the Coliseum, the Vatican, the Sistene Chapel, Trevi Fountain, and many other of the world's treasures. In addition, the city offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle to its 2.5 million residents through the arts, cafes, restaurants, and theatre.

Duration: Academic year, fall, or spring semesters

Fall: Early September ˆ Late December
Spring: Early February ˆ Late May (Early to mid June for University courses)

Courses & credit: Students take 5-6 courses (15 ˆ 19 semester hours) in English or Italian per semester in order to receive 4.0 Wheaton credits. All students are required to take one 4-credit language course with IES Rome. Internships are also available for credit and must be pre-approved by the appropriate Wheaton faculty member. Internships require two semesters of Italian language at the intermediate or advanced level.

Admission requirements: Students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Minimum of two semesters of college-level Italian or equivalent required for students doing an internship. Students with at least one semester of college-level Italian can enroll at RUFA, but must submit a portfolio on slides or CD Rom in addition to the Wheaton application packet. A minimum of four semesters of Italian language are required for students taking courses at the University of Rome.

Housing & board: Housing is arranged with Italian host families or in apartments with other IES students. About half of the apartments have an Italian roommate. Some meals are provided with a host family, while students cook their own meals for the apartment option.

Fees: Wheaton tuition and housing. Expenses covered include tuition, housing, partial board (host families only), program related field trips, transportation subsidy, and an ISIC card.

Other Expenses: Students are responsible for passport and visa fees, round trip airfare (if applicable: connecting US flight/s), textbooks, required cell phone fee, IES insurance and personal expenses.
