Middlebury College affiliation with the University of Florence

Profile: The Middlebury College Program in Florence also known as Sede is one of the most language acquisition-focused programs in Florence. The Italian community in Florence embraces the Middlebury Program students as they live and learn in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. Students truly experience the wonder of Italy and the excitement of Florence, an international and cosmopolitan city.

Location: The Sede is located at Palazzo Giugni, a sixteenth century palace designed by the renowned Bartolomeo Ammannati, which is situated in the academic heart of the old city, an area bustling with coffee shops, bookstores, cultural clubs, and academic buildings. The Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and Florence's other main monuments are all within easy walking distance.

Duration: Academic year, fall, or spring semesters

Program dates:
Fall: Mid September ˆ Mid December- Early - Late January (University end)
Spring: Early February ˆ Late May- Early - Late June (University end)

Courses & credit: Each semester in Florence, students enroll in three of their four courses at the Sede and in one at the Università degli Studi di Firenze (4.0 Wheaton credits.) Students must take the required Grammar course. All courses are taught in Italian. Non-credit bearing internships are available.

Admission requirements: Students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (in the major and in language courses) and a minimum GPA of 2.67 overall. Completion of a minimum of five semesters of college-level language study or the equivalent, including one content course comparable to Middlebury College‚s appropriate pre-requisite course. Students should take a language course in the semester prior to study abroad.

Housing & board: Students arrange their own housing in apartments or with host families with assistance from the Middlebury College Pre-placement program. A list of apartments and families is provided to students.

Fees: Wheaton tuition. Expenses covered include tuition and fees, program-related excursions, Italian insurance, and an ISIC card. Middlebury assists students with the Italian study visa process.

Other Expenses: Students are responsible for passport fees, consulate fees, international round trip airfare (if applicable: connecting US flight/s), board, study abroad insurance, and personal expenses.

Studio Art courses are available through local schools with special permission to qualified students (Il Bisonte or Studio Marangoni) courses such as Printmaking, Etching, Art Photography, Lithography, and Serigraphy.
