Wheaton in Mexico

In affiliation with Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP)

Profile: This program has been established through a Consortium consisting of Oberlin, Smith, Wellesley and Wheaton Colleges. It offers qualified students direct enrollment in one of Mexico's leading public and research universities, the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (50,000 students). Founded in 1578, BUAP offers undergraduate degrees in 55 subjects in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technology, business, law, education and health. The University also has a tradition of social awareness with opportunities for students to become involved in service activities or internships focusing on health, literacy, and community development. BUAP offers an impressive schedule of events and performances in music, dance and the theater, and an extensive sport and student life.

Location: Mexico is one of the closest neighbors and cultural influences on the U.S. Program participants will develop greater insight into Mexico's dynamic cultural and social history. Its political and economic development over three centuries further reveals a past, present and future shared between the two countries. Rich artistic and literary traditions are exemplified in Mayan temples, paintings by Frida Kahlo or the works of Octavio Paz. Puebla de los Angeles (pop. 3,000,000) was founded in 1531 and is considered by many to be the quintessential Mexican city. Puebla represents Mexican culture from pre-Hispanic times to the present. During the Colonial Period, Puebla rivaled Mexico City in the importance of its art and architecture, especially seen in numerous churches and its Cathedral. Mountains and volcanoes define the landscape, and along with a mild climate, make Puebla an inviting destination.
