Glasgow School of Art
Profile: The Glasgow School of Art is internationally recognized as one of Britain's foremost higher education institutions for the study and advancement of fine art, design and architecture. It is a small, specialized and highly focused international community of artists, designers, and architects. Students will find the School an immensely stimulating and creative place where new ideas are always encouraged and developed through teaching and research which is studio based, face to face, professionally relevant and socially engaging. The school has more than 1,600 students, and over 15% of the student community is international, made up of full-time undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree students, study abroad students and visiting exchange students. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the greatest architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed the Macintosh Building located at the heart of the campus.
Location: Founded in 1845, the campus has been based since 1899 in the center of Glasgow, Scotland's largest city (pop. approx. 630,000). Glasgow is home to one of the best metropolitan art galleries and museum collections in the UK, as well as many national performing arts companies. Glasgow is a compact city, and as a student at the GSA you are at the heart of it. Its campus and student residence are situated a short walk from Sauchiehall Street, one of the main pedestrian streets. Getting around Glasgow is easty, whether by foot, the extensive bicycle routes, or by public transport. Scotland's other cities are within easy reach of Glasgow by road and rail.
