In affiliation with COPA, Cooperating Programs in the Americas

Profile: In affiliation with COPA (Cooperating Programs in the Americas), students are fully integrated into campus life and have access to all departments and classes at La Universidad Nacional Autonoma (UNA) in Heredia and la Unversidad de Costa Rica (UCR) in San Jose. UNA, with 15,000 students, offers a full curriculum of undergraduate courses including Latin American Studies, Sociology, Economics, Business, Environmental Studies, Ecology, and Marine Biology. UCR is the oldest university in the country; with some 30,000 students, it offers over 100 major subjects. Costa Rica's history, development as a democracy and commitment to social justice and human rights make it an attractive place to study abroad.

Location: Universidad Nacional Autónoma is located in Heredia, a beautiful city of 74,000 with a laid-back atmosphere, situated a few miles from the capital city of San José. The Universidad de Costa Rica is located in San José itself, a city of 325,000 that is made up of both peaceful colonial-era neighborhoods and a bustling downtown. San José is the center for Costa Rican cultural life, and offers good nightlife and shopping venues.

Courses & credit: Students usually enroll in five to six courses each semester. A mandatory Advanced Spanish Language course may be combined with special program courses taught in Spanish and university courses. 15 to 16 U.S. semester hours earns 4.0 Wheaton credits.
