Wheaton in Ireland

The National University of Ireland: The University College, Cork

Profile: The National University of Ireland campus, University College Cork, is one of Ireland's oldest and leading teaching and research universities. Founded in the 1840's this beautiful campus reflects its historical heritage in the impressive architecture of the central, campus quad. UCC has eight Faculties, ranging from Arts to Science, to Law and Medicine. Courses in Irish culture, archaeology, history and politics offer students an opportunity to explore Ireland's past and its future as part of the European and world communities. UCC boasts a world-renowned Department of Music. The Science Faculty consists of 19 departments and a wide range of disciplines. UCC recently established Institutes for Biosciences and Environmental Research. Among its notable scholars was, professor of mathematics, George Boole, who developed the algebra that makes computer programming possible.

Location: Cork is the second largest city in Ireland (pop. 200,000). Located on the southern coast it benefits from a more temperate climate than other parts of Ireland. With the River Lee as a prominent part of the cityscape, Cork is known as a city of bridges. Early settlements by the Danes established Cork Harbor as a trading center, which later came under English control. During the Irish struggle for independence, Cork was an important base for nationalist politics and resistance. Contemporary Cork is influenced by its student population, with lively arts, cultural, social and sports scenes. It may be surprising to students to find that Irish is spoken in many parts of Cork and many documents, including University publications, are bilingual.
