University of Canterbury

Profile: The University of Canterbury was established in 1873 and is home to 13,400 students each year including 2,100 international students from 50 countries. The university has seven faculties which include Arts, Commerce, Forestry, Law, Music, Fine Arts, and Science. The faculty are involved in cutting edge research in their respective fields and Canterbury is widely known for its Antarctic research and courses.

Location: The University of Canterbury is located in the city of Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand's South Island and home to 360,000 New Zealanders. It is known as the Garden City due to the large number of trees, lakes, and golf courses abutting the downtown business district. It is also home to The Court Theatre, one of New Zealand's most reputable theater companies and the historic Arts Center. Canterbury is also close to beaches as well as to mountains for skiing and snowboarding and easily accessible to other parts of New Zealand.

Duration: Academic year, fall and spring semesters

Program dates:
Fall 2010 (Semester II): approx. July 6 - November 14
Spring 2010 (Semester I): approx. February 23- June 27

Courses & credit: Students enroll in three or four courses called "papers" for a total of 60 credits. Students earn 4.0 Wheaton credits per semester.

Admission requirements: Students with a minimum GPA of 2.8.

Housing & board: Students live in either a single room in a catered residence hall or in a shared, self-catered apartment complex called Illam Village which is located close to the campus.

Fees: Wheaton Comprehensive fee. Expenses covered include tuition and fees, housing and board (residence hall only), assistance with the New Zealand visa process, field station course fees, gym membership, New Zealand Insurance.

Other Expenses: Students are responsible for passport fees, board (Illam Village only), housing fees during breaks, Study Abroad Supplemental Insurance, internet fees, a refundable housing deposit, linen fees, and personal expenses.
