Wheaton in Cairo

The American University in Cairo (AUC)

Profile: The American University in Cairo was founded in 1919 by Americans devoted to education and service in the Middle East and is accredited in the US by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Since 86% of AUC's 5,000 students are Egyptian and the student population is made of 75 different nationalities, this offers students a diverse and multinational study abroad experience with the chance to immerse themselves into the host culture. While the language of instruction is English, students are afforded with the opportunity to enroll in introductory language and culture courses.

Location: Cairo, Egypt's population of 5.5 million. While the University is located downtown, the student residence where Wheaton students will be housed is located in the pleasant residential district, Zamalek. Zamalek has some fairly quiet neighborhoods and good shopping areas. There are tree-lined avenues and it is usually cooled by breezes off the Nile. The residence is about a 15 minute ride to the University via shuttle bus.
