Degrees

Ph.D., M.P.P., University of Maryland Graduate School, Baltimore
B.S.C., University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida

Main Interests

My primary interests relate to the urban growth of metropolitan areas and its impact on people and places. I am particularly curious about the social, economic, political, and environmental impacts of urban growth on cities on suburbs. I am also broadly interested in environmental policy and sustainable development.

Research Interests

My recent research has explored the phenomenon of suburbanization and its impacts on class, race, and the environment. My book Transforming Race and Class in Suburbia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008) explores these themes and the role of public policy in confronting the problem of suburban decline.

I have also analyzed the urbanization over 50 years of the global city region of "Megalopolis" on the U.S. East Coast, demonstrating the role that globalization, environmental change, immigration, class, race, and ethnicity play in shaping global city regions at the brink of the twenty-first century.

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests span the fields of American politics, U.S. government, and public policy areas. I enjoy teaching across these fields and various multidisciplinary policy areas in the social sciences.

The courses that I currently teach include:

Science and Public Policy
Environmental Public Policy
Social Welfare Policy
State and Local Government

Other Interests

In my spare time, I enjoy world travel (especially to Brazil), playing the trumpet, Italian food, and photography.
