Main Interests

Colonial Latin American Literature and Culture
New World Historiography
Comparative approaches to Old World/New World Early Modern Literature
Neo-Latin texts related to the New World
Jesuit missions in the Americas.

Research Interests

I am working in a book project on narratives of navigation and shipwreck in the Caribbean during the colonial times. As my long-term project I continue my work of translation from Latin into Spanish of the Historia Naturæ, Maxime Peregrinæ (Antwerp 1635) by the Jesuit Juan Eusebio Nieremberg; and the philological work of annotation and encoding of Antonio de León Pinelo's rare book El Paraíso en el Nuevo Mundo (Madrid 1650).

Teaching Interests

In addition of teaching Spanish language courses in the Intermediate level, I am using Humanities computing (TEI XML) as a pedagogical tool to introduce advanced Spanish students to the study of Early Modern Spanish American texts. My students get some exposure to the technique of text encoding in TEI XML by being assigned the task of marking-up a selected text. The TEI XML encoding project help students become more knowledgeable regarding the primary text and the context in which it was written. The goals of using TEI in the classroom are: a) to improve students ability in reading and understanding primary sources; b) to initiate them in the experience of scholarly research in literary texts, and c) to provide them with the skills for using technology tools and Humanities computing resources.

Student Projects

In collaboration with my students of HISP-298, hyper-textual edition of Libro de los Infortunios y Naufragios (Book of the Misfortunes and Shipwrecks) (Seville, 1535) by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo. http://webedit.wheatonma.edu/custom/xslt/users/xs12057321/output/xx68380113/index.html
