Main Interests
Medieval history, medieval intellectual traditions and culture, theology, world religions, pre-modern heretical and heterodox movements
Research Interests
Currently my research focuses on the construction of medieval theology, much of which is still a viable religious and intellectual dimension in modern Catholicism. My own work centers on how much of the ancient (Greek) philosophic tradition was assimilated by medieval intellectuals in their attempts to rationalize and intellectualize Christian principles. My work at Harvard Divinity School has been directed towards these interests. Work in progress also includes a critical edition of a philosophic work on hierarchies, by a 13th century Bishop, Robert Grosseteste, who translated this earlier work from Greek into Latin; and a series of articles on Christian Neo-Platonism.
Teaching Interests
I teach a wide variety of courses which spans the European tradition from ancient times to the Renaissance and into the time of religious Reformation. I also teach a course on the early history of science, and a First Year Seminar on the history of witchcraft in Europe and Colonia America. I also teach an advanced course on the philosophy of history, Junior Colloquium, which is required of all history majors.
Other Interests
In addition to my academic work in history, I am interested in public, or living, history as presented in Museums and Historical Societies. I am closely affiliated with the Martha's Vineyard Museum and Historical Society located in my home community of Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA., and have channeled many Wheaton students into summer internships there.
