298. Experimental Course

Work and Organizations

In this course we will look at how the type of economy, industry, and organization in which we work impacts our work experiences, our career opportunities and trajectories, the kinds of rewards we can expect, and our level of influence over the conditions under which we conduct our work. Students will conduct research on a particular profession of their choosing and explore variations in work experiences and rewards across different types of work organizations (international, state, non-profit, private). Although the focus of this course is to explore sociological theories and research on work and organizations, this would be a good course to take prior to, or following, a summer internship experience or in conjunction with trying to identify whether a particular career path is right for you.
