Section A35: Fit for a Queen: Dress of the Fashionable and the Formidable

The course will examine the changing styles of dress throughout western history, with emphasis on particular individuals whose influence on fashion is/was rivaled only by their influence on politics and social movements. Students will examine fashion from a variety of viewpoints, including fashion as a means of communication, a social/political commentary and a record of technological development.

Particular emphasis will be placed on powerful female figures from the span of western history, and we will examine how each of them used fashion to become the "pop icons" of their day.
