Section A29: Right and Wrong, Life and Death

This seminar will explore the role of moral values in controversial issues such as euthanasia, assisted suicide, abortion, capital punishment, gender role expectations for men and women, gay/lesbian rights and same-sex marriage and others. As a case study we will look at the choices we make about our food: should we eat locally? Organically? Vegetarian? Vegan? Does eating require moral choices? We will address some of the issues raised in your summer reading, The Omnivore's Dilemma and we will participate in hands-on projects: growing vegetables in an organic garden behind the Balfour Hood Center, preparing a meal from what we grow and taking field trips.
