Bessie Smith, Langston Hughes, Oscar Micheaux, Eugene O'Neil, and Mary White Ovington, among others, make the Harlem Renaissance. This course considers the ideologies of modernity as they operate in contexts such as literature, uplift philanthropy, and migration to examine the relationships between race and modernity during the period.
