EMILY MASON

When you were a child, Emily Mason, you have said that you never wondered whether you would be a painter; rather you wondered what type of painter you would become. The answer to that question has been long evident to the art world where your works are known for their dazzling color and intellectual exuberance.

Your strong artistic identity is all the more noteworthy since one might say your family's business is painting. Your grandmother studied in Paris; your mother was an early leader in American artists' exploration of abstract art; and your husband, Wolf Kahn, is considered a modern master of landscapes. Though surely influenced by this legacy, you have forged your own path. The force of your artistic vision was recognized early with a Fulbright fellowship; your solo exhibitions in some of the nation's top galleries have won critical praise and devoted collectors.

You have likened painting to a string quartet, assigning your palette's colors the timbres of different instruments. That metaphor resonates with those of us who marvel at the brilliant harmony of form and color in your works. Emily Mason, we applaud your dedication to art and the thoughtful skill you apply to sharing your vision with us.
