Great leaders inspire others to achieve what seems impossible. Anson Beard, you have repeatedly shown yourself to be one of those rare individuals by challenging us to exceed our own expectations.Following graduation from Yale, you took your energy and drive straight to Wall Street, building a career defined by aggressive and intelligent risk taking. From your beginnings with Laird, Inc. to your long and successful tenure as managing director at Morgan Stanley, your leadership and management skills have enabled you to excel. Wheaton College, too, has profited from your business acumen, your candor and your vision. For 29 years you have served this college as a trustee, fundraiser extraordinaire and generous donor, leading by example.
Your gifts are everywhere on this campus, although not all in plain view - the Beard Field House, the first Trustee Scholarship, several faculty chairs, the Annual Fund and countless anonymous challenges to urge others to make Wheaton a higher priority in their philanthropy. You have likened your own giving to Archimedes' principle of leverage: lifting great weight with well-placed force. Your devotion to Wheaton has also inspired gifts in your honor, most recently from your family.
Ever the visionary investor, you continue to advance Wheaton's future strength, pushing the Campaign for Wheaton beyond its goal, inspiring all of us to dream "of what we yet shall be."
Anson Beard, your service to this college as Trustee, Chair of the Board and Co-Chair of the Campaign for Wheaton is legendary.
