Lynn Miller
Head Coach
Contact information
Striving to teach student-athletes to cherish the value of competitive tennis in a context that encourages their growth as individuals and productive, socially responsible members of society, head coach Lynn Miller has been fulfilling that commitment to excellence at Wheaton for 27 years.
She emphasizes that physical fitness is a life-long process and that one's athletic life does not have to end upon graduation. In conjunction with the ideals of a liberal arts college tradition, she also aims to maintain the integrity of sport and encourages players to value high ethical standards in competition.
Miller led the men's and women's squads to a pair of successful seasons during the 2006-07 academic year. On the men's side, the Lyons garnered their third straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament finals appearance en route to an 11-5 record. During the 2005-06 season, Wheaton drew its first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking. For the women, Miller led the Lyons to an 11-5 mark and a spot in last fall's ITA Northeast poll.
A three-time conference coach of the year and 2004 United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) New England Coach of the Year, Miller has posted an all-time record of 270-195-2 (.580) in women's tennis with 10-plus wins in 17 of 27 seasons, while having individuals compete in the NCAA and ITA National Tournaments. With the men, Miller has had 12 seasons of 10-plus victories over an 18-year span, including boasting a cumulative mark of 181-104 (.635).
A Level I USPTA and USPTR (United States Professional Tennis Registry) certified tennis professional, Miller recently received USPTA New England Player-of-the-Year honors (45 and over women's singles). Under Miller's direction, Wheaton was honored as Educational Institution of the Year by USA Tennis New England. A nationally-ranked NASTAR (National Standard Race) ski racer, the multi-talented Miller qualified for the collegiate women's tennis nationals and competed several times in the United States Women's Lacrosse Association (USWLA) nationals.
Since coming to Wheaton, Miller has held a plethora of responsibilities in teaching and coaching tennis. She is the director and head coach of the tennis camp at Wheaton, which is now in its 25th year. Miller has served as the head clinician for Wheaton's annual high school tennis coaches' clinic. In 1996, Miller was the coach of the USTA New England Zonal Team in St. Louis.
Miller, who earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Plymouth State University in 1974, was a two-time New England collegiate doubles champion. She was inducted into Plymouth State's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. Miller received a master's degree with a concentration in sports psychology from Penn State University in 1978.
