Two figures wins propel Wheaton to third at ECAC Championship

WILLIAMSBURG, VA- Senior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School) and freshman Sonvje Ryen (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian) each won figures competitions, and the Wheaton College synchronized swimming team placed third as the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship wrapped up on Sunday at The College of William & Mary.

During their first competition in three weeks, the Lyons narrowly missed their third runner-up finish in four years, tallying 75 points, and came within two points of Keuka College. Canisius College won the six-team meet with 102 points.

Kinney topped B figures with 70.258 points, edging out the second-place finisher by 0.139 points, while Ryen had the best showing in C figures with 67.981 points. The runner up notched 67.355. During D figures, freshman Jenna Calvino (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) recorded 62.187 points to place third, coming within 0.706 points of second. Sophomore Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) took fifth in A figures at 79.554, finishing 0.105 points short of fourth.

Three of Wheaton's routines corralled third-place showings, while each of its trios finished among the top five. The Lyon team, comprised of Calvino, Kinney, Montes, Ryen, junior Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West) and sophomore Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden), captured third with 83.500 points, falling just 0.333 shy of second.

During the solo portion of the meet, Montes came in third with 83.500 points, beating out a fourth-place Keuka swimmer by one point and coming with 0.167 of a second-place Storm competitor. Swinkin and Syracuse finished third in the duet with 78.833 points.

In trio, Wheaton took fourth and fifth. Kinney, Montes and Ryen totaled 81.667 points, and they were followed closely by Calvino, Swinkin and Syracuse, who notched 80.667.

The Lyons turn right around and return to competition on Thursday, as the three-day United States Collegiate Championship begins at The Ohio State University at 8:00 a.m. Wheaton has finished among the top 10 each of the past 19 years.
