Three women's swimmers named to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team

March 5, 2008

NORTON, MA- Five Wheaton College student-athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the winter of 2007-08. Women's swimming and diving had three honorees, recording the most academic all-conference qualifiers among Wheaton's winter sports for the sixth straight year.

Student-athletes receiving the award must have maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2007 fall semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season.

Senior co-captain Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose), junior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and sophomore Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) each drew academic honors after pushing the women's swimming and diving squad to a program-best third-place finish at the NEWMAC Championship. The Lyons also posted a 16-3 dual mark, as the Lyons eclipsed the program's victories record for the fourth straight season.

After playing a hand in seven school records this year and qualifying for four all-conference honors, Pratt drew academic all-conference honors for the third consecutive season. Glover helped the 800-yard freestyle relay squad break a school record and earned her second academic accolade, while Meehan was cited in her first year eligible for the award after playing a role in two program marks this season and twice earning all-conference citations.

Junior quad-captain Jennie Pleat (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) and sophomore Stephanie Michals (Fairfax, VA/Saint Stephen's & Saint Agnes School) of the women's basketball team each qualified for their first honor. In 28 contests, Pleat has averaged 3.9 points while turning in 50 assists and shooting 73.5 percent on free throw tries. Michals has appeared in 23 games, shooting just under 40 percent from the field and connecting on 70.0 percent of her attempts from the charity stripe.

The duo helped Wheaton win its first NEWMAC regular season and tournament crowns and draw its initial league title and NCAA Tournament berth since the 1994-95 season. With 20 wins for the first time in 13 seasons, the 22-6 Lyons begin play in the national tournament on Friday against Tufts University at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York.

The NEWMAC sponsors four winter sports: men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming and diving.
