Three Wheaton softball players garner NEWMAC All-Conference laurels

April 29, 2008

WORCESTER, MA- Three Wheaton College softball players were selected to a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league team for the second straight year during Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

Senior tri-captain Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) and junior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) were named to the first team, while senior Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) was voted to the second squad. In the 10-year history of the NEWMAC, the Lyons have placed at least three players on all-conference teams nine times.

Moynagh, who garnered the first postseason honor of her four-year career, was second among all NEWMAC pitchers during league action in strikeouts, earned run average and opposing batting average while tying for third in wins and placing fourth in innings pitched. Overall, Moynagh stands second in both wins and strikeouts while ranking third in ERA, innings pitched and opposing batting average. She is also tied for third in saves. Moynagh struck out six-plus batters 10 times in 12 starts against NEWMAC foes, doing so in 19 of her 25 starts. During 17 of her 26 appearances, Moynagh averaged at least one strikeout per inning.

This year, Moynagh became the third Lyon pitcher to post three 100-strikeout seasons. She is fifth in single-season strikeouts and 10th in wins and shutouts. For her career, Moynagh is tied for second in saves, third in each wins, strikeouts, pitching appearances, innings and complete games and fourth in shutouts.

Tabbed to the all-conference second team her sophomore season, Kelleher led all league players this season during NEWMAC action in average, slugging and on-base percentage and tied for first in home runs, tied for fifth in doubles, tied for sixth in RBI and tied for eighth in hits despite missing three games. While serving as both a designated player and a first baseman, Kelleher had 10 multiple-hit games and turned in a 14-game hitting streak at one point. Overall, she is tied for fourth in the league in doubles and ranks sixth in slugging, ninth in average and tied for ninth in RBI.

Picking up her first all-league honor, Poulton, who is currently tied for fourth in Division III saves, totaled 14 multiple-hit games as a first baseman and outfielder while yielding a .136 opposing batting average with two outs during her stints as a hurler. During NEWMAC action, Poulton led all league players in saves and tied for third in sacrifice bunts, tied for fifth in hits, was seventh in average, tied for eighth in stolen bases and was 10th in on-base percentage. For all games, Poulton tops the NEWMAC in saves, is tied for first in sacrifice bunts, tied for second in doubles, tied for fourth in relief appearances, sixth in average, seventh in stolen bases and tied for eighth in both hits and runs.

Poulton's program-record four saves this spring helped the Lyon pitching staff to a school-mark eight. Offensively, she is tied for third in program history in sacrifice bunts and tied for 10th in doubles, notching the program's most since 2003. Poulton is first in career saves, fourth in strikeouts, fifth in appearances and tied for eighth in wins.

Boasting a 29-14 overall record, Wheaton was one victory shy of reaching the 30-win plateau for the first time since 2004 and 10th time in head coach Gina Loudenburg's 19-year tenure. Loudenburg, who resigned her position after accumulating over 500 career wins, led this year's Lyons to a 12-4 conference mark and runner-up placement in the nine-team league. In tournament play, Wheaton came within one game of the championship round.
