Softball completes regular season with doubleheader split at EndicottApril 22, 2006 BEVERLY, MA- Wheaton College sophomore Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) pitched a four-hit shutout during a 1-0 game one victory over Endicott College before the Lyons fell in game two, 4-3 in eight innings during the back half of a non-conference softball twinbill Saturday. The Blue and White completed its regular season with a 24-14 mark, while the Gulls moved to 20-12. By going to extra innings eight times in their last 28 games, the Lyons matched their total from the previous 155 contests dating back to 2003. Wheaton scored the only run of the first game in the top of the first inning, as junior Keely Nowosacki (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) poked a double to left with two down and came around on classmate Jessica DePolito's (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) single to right. DePolito was the lone player with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3. Moynagh tied her career high by striking out 11 batters in the opener, walking only two and yielding four singles. She left five runners stranded in scoring position during the first four innings, including three at third base, and fanned the final batter in each of those frames. For Endicott, junior Robyn Savitske (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) also yielded only four hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Endicott finished off a seesaw second contest in extra innings after the Lyons twice rallied from deficits. Sophomore Paula McGinn (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) led off the game with a walk and later eluded a rundown to steal home, but Wheaton freshman Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) ripped an RBI single in the second. In the sixth, the Gulls captured a 3-1 lead on freshman Meghan Sargent's (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional) two-run double, but the Lyons knotted the score the next inning. Junior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) led off with a single, moved to third on freshman Jessica DeRico's (Griswold, CT/Griswold) base hit and scored on a double steal attempt. With one down, Nowosacki launched her third home run of the week just beyond the reach of the left fielder to tie the game. However, Endicott pulled out the win when senior Megan Huckins (Bangor, ME/Bangor) singled home freshman pinch-runner Cali Collin (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown Central) with two down in the eighth. Freshman Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) led Wheaton's 12-hit attack with a perfect 3-for-3 effort, while Lachance and Nowosacki each banged out a pair of hits. Sophomore Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) was the hard-luck loser, allowing only three hits and two earned runs in 7.2 innings while striking out six and walking three. Freshman Jackie Collier (Swampscott, MA/Bishop Fenwick) notched the win after striking out three and walking two during a complete-game effort. With the regular season complete, Wheaton awaits word on its postseason fate tomorrow. The Lyons will travel to either Smith College or Wellesley College for a NEWMAC Tournament first round contest on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
