Lyons close regular season home slate with shutout losses to WellesleyApril 21, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College softball team closed its regular season home schedule on a down note Friday afternoon, as the Lyons suffered a pair of 4-0 losses to Wellesley College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark Field. Wheaton, which dropped out of contention for a regular season conference title, finishes its NEWMAC slate at 9-7 while falling to 23-13 overall. The Lyons' seeding for next week's tournament will be determined following tomorrow's league games. Wellesley reached the 20-win plateau and improved to 20-9 and 8-6. Wellesley sophomore hurler Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario/Clarke Road Secondary) twirled a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and classmate Meghan Sullivan (Unionville, Ontario/Saint Augustine) drove in two runs and scored once in today's opener. The visitors capitalized on a pair of Wheaton defensive miscues in the opening inning, pushing two runs across as Harvey and Sullivan each plated a run. Harvey struck out the first four batters she faced and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The Lyons loaded the bases with two down in the third but came up empty as Harvey got out of the inning unscathed by retiring the next batter on strikes. Sullivan homered to left field in the sixth and senior Allison Kramer (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) posted a two-out, run-scoring double to left center made the score 4-0. Wheaton again left the bags loaded in the sixth, as Harvey induced a pop fly to second for the second out of the frame followed by her 10th strikeout of the game to end the threat. Lyon sophomore righty Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) was saddled with the loss after allowing two earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Similar to game one, the nightcap saw Wellesley jump out in front after a half inning of play. Harvey's single to left center in the first scored sophomore Christine Sodaro (Tiburon, CA/Redwood) and the Blue never looked back. Wheaton had runners in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings, including having runners on second and third with one down in the third, but was unable to plate that elusive first run. Wellesley tacked on a trio of unearned runs in the final two innings to complete the scoring. Wheaton junior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) and sophomore Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) each went 2-for-3 in the loss. Sullivan paced the visitors, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, run and triple, while Harvey went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Wheaton sophomore pitcher Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) took the loss after yielding just one earned run on eight hits while fanning three batters and walking one. Wellesley sophomore Kristie Gola (Bordentown, NJ/Holy Cross) tossed a six-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks. The Lyons finish their regular season slate tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference twinbill at Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Endicott College beginning at 12:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
