Wheaton swaps shutouts during NEWMAC twinbill split at Clark

April 15, 2006

WORCESTER, MA- The Wheaton College softball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark University, winning by a 3-0 count in game one and falling, 6-0 in the second contest on Saturday at O'Brien Field. The Lyons remained in second place in the conference at 21-11 overall and 9-5 in the league, while the Cougars are now 8-17 and 3-9.

The visitors rode sophomore Jodi Moynagh's (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) two-hit shutout to victory in the opener, as she returned to her hometown and yielded two walks while striking out six. Wheaton loaded the bases with no one out in the first and scored its lone run on a throwing error. Junior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) led off with a single up the middle, classmate Keely Nowosacki (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) roped an infield hit, and junior Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) singled off the first base bag before Nowosacki trotted home on an infield miscue.

Wheaton tacked on two more runs in the third, as Lachance led off with a walk, moved to third on DePolito's one-out single and stole home. Freshman Emily Hildreth (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) later brought in DePolito on a two-out hit. Lachance finished 3-for-3, while DePolito was 2-for-3.

Moynagh carried a no-hitter into the fourth before graduate student Jackie DeMore (Essex, MA/Hamilton-Wenham) doubled to center with two down. DeMore picked up Clark's other hit, a leadoff single in the seventh, and the Cougars brought the tying run to the plate with none out. However, Moynagh fanned her sixth batter for the first out and, with runners now on second and third, induced a ground ball and a fly ball for the final two outs.

DeMore went 2-for-3, while sophomore hurler Heather Warren (Upland, CA/Upland) allowed one earned run on seven hits during a complete game, walking one and striking out one. Warren also tossed all seven innings during game two, which the Cougars broke open with four runs on six hits in the third inning.

Already up 1-0 after scoring in the second, the hosts put the game away during their big third frame, as three players contributed RBI hits and another run scored on an outfield miscue. Junior Kaitlin Kelley (Guilford, CT/Guilford) was a common factor in the second- and third-inning rallies, reaching base on a hit and scoring each time. Meanwhile, classmate Lauren Ackein (Tacoma, WA/Henry Foss) doubled and scored during both the third and sixth frames, plating Clark's final run of the contest during the sixth stanza.

Wheaton went down in order only once during the back half of the twinbill but struggled offensively, tallying only four hits. Sophomore Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five earned runs on 13 hits in six innings while walking one and fanning four. Warren struck out five and walked one during the victory, while Ackein and Kelley were each 2-for-3 with two runs. DeMore, junior Julie Muszalski (Worcester, MA/South) and sophomore Julie Parnell (Webster, MA/Bartlett) also each contributed a pair of hits.

The Lyons host a pair of doubleheaders next week, beginning with a Tuesday double dip with Framingham State College on Clark Field at 3:30 p.m.
