Lyons fall short in both ends of doubleheader with Coast GuardApril 14, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College softball team dropped both ends of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with the United States Coast Guard Academy, 3-1 in eight innings and 4-2 on Friday at Clark Field. The Lyons, 20-10 overall and 8-4 in the conference, fell from first place in the NEWMAC into a second-place tie with the Bears, who are 17-13 and 8-4. Wheaton had at least one runner on base in each inning during the opener but was blanked through the first four frames, as the Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth on sophomore Erin Cullen's (Dublin, OH) one-out RBI single up the middle. The Lyons responded in the home half, as junior Nicole Lachance's (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) pop into shallow right center field allowed sophomore Meredith Gorton (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) to score from third with two down. In the eighth inning, the Bears struck with a pair of runs on two hits, as senior Stephanie Kimmel (San Antonio, TX) smacked a one-out RBI double before freshman Jeannie Crump (Roseville, CA) immediately followed with a run-scoring single. Wheaton went down in order in the bottom of the inning. Wheaton freshmen Jessica DeRico (Griswold, CT/Griswold) and Emily Hildreth (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) each went 2-for-2, while junior Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) and freshman Katelynn Hanewich (Bradenton, FL/Lakewood Ranch) smacked a double apiece. Sophomore Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) was tagged with the loss after yielding two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six batters and walking none. Crump was the only Bear with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Junior Colleen Perry (Norwalk, CT) allowed seven hits during a complete-game effort while fanning five and walking one. The Lyons grabbed the initial lead in game two, as Hanewich launched her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot over the left field fence, with one down in the third inning. However, Coast Guard put together a pair of two-out, nobody-on rallies in the fifth and sixth innings, as the Bears plated a single run in each frame to knot the contest. Kimmel tripled to drive home a run in the fifth, while freshman hurler Katie Murray (Bloomfield Hills, MI) helped herself with a game-tying RBI single during the sixth. Coast Guard again came through with two runs on two hits during its final time at bat. Crump doubled home Kimmel with one down in the seventh for what proved to be the game-winning run before Crump came around on an infield error late in the inning. Poulton picked up the loss in relief during game two, yielding two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) allowed two runs on two hits over the first 5.2 frames. For Coast Guard, Crump was the game's lone multiple hitter thanks to a pair of doubles. Murray, a southpaw, tossed a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two earned runs and three bases on balls with one strikeout. The Lyons return to action tomorrow with a NEWMAC doubleheader at Clark University beginning at 12:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 4/14/06. |
