Lachance and Poulton earn weekly NEWMAC softball accolades

April 10, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College softball standouts Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) and Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) were named player of the week and pitcher of the week, respectively, by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the week ending on Sunday, April 9.

A junior co-captain and the team's primary shortstop, Lachance played a key part in Wheaton's 5-0 week as the Lyons' leadoff hitter. Lachance was integral in a number of comeback efforts, beginning with a game-tying RBI double in the seventh inning of Friday's contest at Babson College with one out. Wheaton eventually won, 3-2 in 10 innings. Against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Sunday, Lachance singled home the opening contest's first run during the fifth inning of a 5-3 win. In the second game, Lachance led off with a home run before tallying the go-ahead run with two down in the fifth during a 3-2 victory.

To begin her week, Lachance walked twice during a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Thursday. During the five games, Lachance recorded a .474 on-base percentage, walking five times and striking out only once, while slugging .643 thanks to a pair of doubles and the home run. She is tied with five others for the league lead in home runs (3), tied for eighth in runs (15), tied for ninth in stolen bases (5) and tied for 10th in doubles (5).

Poulton, one of two hurlers on Wheaton's roster, posted a 3-0 mark and 1.75 earned run average despite receiving only 11 runs of support. The sophomore righty completed all three games which she started, limiting opposing hitters to a .141 average (11-for-78) while striking out 19 batters in 24 innings and walking only five.

Poulton took a shutout into the seventh inning of game two at MIT on Thursday before yielding only one hit over the final 9.1 innings of a 10-inning affair at Babson the following afternoon. On Saturday, she carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning of game one versus WPI.

Thus far this spring, Poulton has gone 9-3 and completed 11 of the 13 games which she has started. In 96.1 innings, she has fanned the fifth-most batters (71) in the league and ranks 12th in ERA (2.11).

Lachance, Poulton and the Lyons head into action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut State University beginning at 5:00 p.m.
