Softball drops second game of two-day set with Springfield

April 2, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, MA- Wheaton College finished up a two-day series with Springfield College by falling in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball contest, 4-1 at Potter Field on Sunday. The teams met today after the second game of Saturday's regularly-scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Lyons, who are 12th in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, dropped their fourth straight and are 13-7 overall and 2-2 in the league. Springfield is now 10-10 and 4-2.

Freshman Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) put Wheaton on top by doubling with one down in the bottom of the fourth inning to plate sophomore pinch-runner Abby Taylor (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley), but Springfield responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth.

Senior Amanda Johansson (Leominster, MA/Leominster) led off the fourth with a game-tying home run for the Pride before classmate Keir Stanford (Melrose, MA/Melrose) came home with the eventual winning run on freshman Kasey Calderone's (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) one-out single to left. Springfield completed its scoring when sophomore Denise Fumicello (Brockton, MA/Cardinal Spellman) singled in two runs with two down in the sixth.

In the seventh, Wheaton freshman Jessica DeRico (Griswold, CT/Griswold) drew a two-out walk before sophomore Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) smacked a pinch-hit single, but Springfield sophomore hurler Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, CT/King & Low-Heywood Thomas) retired the potential tying run to cap her second complete game in as many days against the Lyons.

Seven different Wheaton players finished with one hit apiece, while sophomore Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) received the loss after yielding four earned runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort. Moynagh fanned six and walked two.

Stanford went 2-for-3 with a double, while Fumicello finished 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. Blackman scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out one batter.

Wheaton continues NEWMAC play on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 3:00 p.m.
