Wheaton drops first NEWMAC contest before game two washed out

April 1, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College softball team dropped its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest of the season, 9-4 at Springfield College's Potter Field on Saturday before the second half of the doubleheader was rained out and postponed until tomorrow.

The Lyons, who are 12th in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, have lost three straight and fell to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Pride is 9-10 and 3-2.

Junior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) led off the contest with her second home run of the season, but Springfield senior Amanda Johansson (Leominster, MA/Leominster) knotted the score on an RBI single with one down in the bottom half of the first inning. The Pride blew it open the following inning, plating five runs on one hit and an error that led to four unearned runs. Senior Sarah Bagierek (Douglas, MI/Saugatuck) provided the lone hit, a key two-run single.

Wheaton cut its deficit to 6-3 by scoring twice on wild pitches in the third, but Springfield scored three of the game's final four runs, all three of which were unearned. Johansson and Bagierek smacked consecutive run-scoring hits with two down in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Lachance finished 2-for-3 with a double and the home run, while junior Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) went 2-for-4. Bagierek led Springfield with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBI, Johansson was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and sophomore Denise Fumicello (Brockton, MA/Cardinal Spellman) scored three runs.

Sophomore Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) picked up the loss after yielding seven runs, two of which were earned, on six hits and three walks in four innings. Springfield sophomore Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, CT/King & Low-Heywood Thomas) tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out three.

The doubleheader is scheduled to resume tomorrow with Wheaton and Springfield squaring off at 1:00 p.m. in Springfield.
