Wheaton clinches sixth consecutive NEWMAC regular season championship with 3-0 shutout at Babson

October 19, 2004

BABSON PARK, MA- The number-one ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team clinched its sixth straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship Tuesday with a 3-0 victory at Babson College. Extending their conference winning streak to 47 games, the Lyons have won six of the seven regular season titles since the NEWMAC began in 1998.

With the win, the Blue and White saw their overall record improve to 16-0 with a 7-0 mark in conference play, while the Beavers suffered their second NEWMAC loss of the season to fall to 3-2-2 and 8-5-2 overall. Recording four consecutive shutouts and six shutouts in its last seven games, Wheaton has outscored its opponents, 51-3 including a 25-3 clip in the NEWMAC.

Despite 14 first-half shots by the Lyons, the game remained scoreless for almost 39 minutes before sophomore Jordan Pouliot (Manchester, NH/Trinity) fed senior Erin Brennan (Mesa, AZ/Xavier College Prep) for the game's first goal to break the stalemate. Brennan split two Babson defenders before beating junior goalkeeper Marci McCormack (Wolcott, CT/The Taft School) to the bottom left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Pouliot opened the second half with a goal of her own when senior Beth Caromile (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) found her with a well-placed cross for the two-goal advantage. Caromile's eighth assist of the season upped her career total to 27, which places her in a tie for sixth for most assists in a career. Freshman Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) then scored the game's final goal on a Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) cross with roughly 11 minutes remaining in the match.

Lyons' freshman netminder Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) posted five saves to record her 10th full shutout of the season, placing her in sole possession of fifth place in the school's annals for most shutouts in a season. McCormack tallied 12 stops in the loss. Wheaton held a 28-10 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Blue and White will take on their final non-conference opponent of the regular season Thursday, October 21, as the Lyons play host to Bridgewater State College at 3:30 p.m.
