Senior captains draw All-New England laurels for first timeDecember 20, 2007 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer seniors Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day School) and Jim Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) drew All-New England laurels for the first time in their respective careers. Each landed on the D3Kicks.com all-region third team, while Cote was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas NCAA Division III All-New England third team. The selections of Cote and Ferriero, the Lyons' lone captains, gave Wheaton at least one all-region honoree for the 14th consecutive season, dating back to 1994. Cote was one of five New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) athletes among 44 named to the NSCAA's four teams, as the top four players landed on the third squad. Five NEWMAC athletes drew D3Kicks.com laurels, as a total of 33 were on the three teams. A three-time NEWMAC All-Conference midfielder, Cote notched four goals and two assists in 22 games for the Lyons. Three of his markers stood as game-winners, and his veteran presence was important for a team that had nine freshmen appear in at least 14 games. All four of Cote's goals gave Wheaton the lead, including during the Lyons' 2-0 victory over Bridgewater State College on November 7 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cote netted the first goal of a 2-1 win against Babson College on October 20 that allowed the Blue and White to clinch the NEWMAC regular season title. Ferriero started each of the final 21 games this fall as the most veteran defender, as two of the four regular starters in the backfield were freshmen, and each of the team's three keepers was first-year players. Ferriero helped the Lyons post six shutouts and a 1.26 goals against average, as Wheaton limited 10 additional opponents to one goal. Ferriero turned in both of his assists for the year during a Wheaton victory that propelled the Blue and White to the league's regular season crown. He also earned his first NEWMAC All-Conference honor this fall. Wheaton went 14-6-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the NEWMAC, winning both its seventh regular season and tournament crowns. The Lyons made their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance, including their seventh in the last eight seasons. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/9/08. |
