Pachniuk ties Wheaton's wins mark during 3-1 triumph at Salve Regina

October 10, 2006

NEWPORT, RI- Senior goalkeeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) corralled his 50th career win to match Wheaton College's program mark during a 3-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Salve Regina University on Tuesday at Reynolds Field. The Blue and White extended its unbeaten streak to seven games while moving to 13-0-1 all time against the Seahawks.

With his sixth triumph of the season, Pachniuk tied Jon Girolamo '98 for Wheaton's career lead. The Lyons have received balanced production while scoring 13 goals during their streak, as eight different players have tallied and 12 have registered points. Wheaton, tied for 10th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, is now 8-3-3, while the Seahawks are 6-8-1.

Wheaton scored twice during a 33-second span early in the game for all the offense it would need. Senior Ariel Tatum (Cayman Islands, BWI/Holderness School) netted the first goal at 7:57 off a restart from near midfield, as his long shot eventually settled in for his second marker of the season. At 8:30, sophomore Justin Hart (Ashland, MA/Ashland) converted classmate Jeff Shea's (Canton, MA/Canton) feed for a 2-0 Wheaton lead. Hart's goal went down as his second game-winner this fall.

Sophomore Mathurin Coulibaly (Ivory Coast, Africa/Saint George's School) tallied with 15 minutes left in the contest thanks to his first goal this season, as he corralled a rebound off freshman Tyler Ostholthoff's (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) shot. Ostholthoff received the assist for his first collegiate point.

With two minutes to go, the Seahawks got on the board, snapping a pair of streaks and preventing Pachniuk from moving into sole possession of first place in program history for career shutouts. Freshman Clayton Slawson's (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) goal was the hosts' first in more than 943 minutes against the Lyons since September 19, 1992, and broke a run of 41 straight goals the Lyons had scored in the series.

Pachniuk finished with one save, and Seahawk senior Geoff Wiley (Norwell, MA/Thayer Academy) had 10 as the Lyons held a 22-7 advantage in shots. Each team recorded one corner kick.

The Lyons continue a stretch of three straight non-conference contests by hosting Worcester State College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. on Keefe Field.
