Lane's overtime game-winner helps hand Coast Guard first league lossOctober 7, 2006 NORTON, MA- Sophomore Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) notched his fourth game-winner as the Wheaton College men's soccer team edged the United States Coast Guard Academy, 3-2 in Saturday's nip-and-tuck New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) overtime game at Keefe Field. Handing Coast Guard its first conference loss, the Lyons moved into a first-place tie with a mark of 3-1. Wheaton, which is tied for 10th in New England according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), raised its record to 7-3-3, while the Bears, ranked ninth regionally, fall to 6-3-1 and 2-1. Playing in its program-record-tying seventh overtime game of the season, Wheaton capitalized on a restart in the 96th minute. From the top of the box, senior Ariel Tatum (Cayman Islands, BWI/Holderness School) pushed the ball to his left using classmate Cameron Habib (Norfolk, MA/Bridgton Academy) as a decoy, as Lane ripped his shot out of the reach of Coast Guard freshman keeper Tim Olah (Glastonbury, CT). Tatum also had a hand in Wheaton's and the game's first goal of the afternoon, flicking a corner kick from senior Dennis Durao (West Hartford, CT/Northwest Catholic) on to the head of junior Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day), who directed his header just underneath the crossbar to give the Lyons a 1-0 edge at 14:40. Just over 20 minutes later, the Bears took advantage of a Blue and White handball in the box, and senior Scott Senkier (Lagrangeville, NY) capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick to knot the score. In the second half, the hosts recaptured the lead at 59:32 when Durao lifted his restart from the lower right side of the box to the far post, where junior Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) lunged forward and headed the ball into the back of the net. Coast Guard responded, this time just 1:27 later when senior Casey Steuer (Madison, WI) fed junior Ben Weber (Eden Prairie, MN) a through ball for the finish. Steuer later had a chance to give the visitors their first lead of the game with 21 minutes left, but his shot from the right flank rolled just left of the post. Lane's game-winner went for his team-leading ninth tally of the season, and it was the overtime's first shot for either side. Wheaton senior goalkeeper David Croft (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) picked up the win in relief after posting one save in nearly 81 minutes of action, while Olah, who had a hand in punching out the majority of the Lyons' 11 corner kick opportunities, took the loss. Wheaton turns its attention away from conference play for the next two weeks, as the Lyons begin a three-game non-league stretch at Salve Regina University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. SCORING: 1st 2nd OT Final 1st Half: WC- Trevor Cote (Ariel Tatum, Dennis Durao) 14:40; CGA- Scott Senkier (penalty kick) 35:25 2nd Half: WC- Dan Chong (Durao) 59:32; CGA- Ben Weber (Casey Steuer) 60:59 OT: WC- Dan Lane (Tatum) 95:34 Goalie Saves: WC- Matt Pachniuk (14:40) 0, David Croft (80:54) 1; CGA- Tim Olah 0 Shots: WC- 15; CGA- 7 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
