Four-game winless skid ends as Wheaton men's soccer downs MIT, 2-0September 23, 2006 CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team snapped a four-game winless skid with a 2-0 victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday at Steinbrenner Stadium. The Lyons are now 5-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while MIT is 3-4 and 0-2. In a rematch of last season's NEWMAC Tournament title game, a trio of unlikely scorers played a hand in both goals, and senior keeper David Croft (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) made the most of his first start of the season. Croft stopped three shots while notching his sixth career win and fourth shutout. He also blanked MIT for nearly 85 minutes during the 2005 NEWMAC Tournament championship tilt. After a scoreless first half, in which MIT held a 3-2 edge in shots, freshman Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) tallied off senior Cameron Habib's (Norfolk, MA/Bridgton Academy) assist in the 57th minute for his first career goal. It was just Habib's fifth assist in 75 career games. At 69:17, junior back Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) buried his first goal of the season, and third in 46 career contests. The Lyons outshot MIT, 11-1 in the second half while holding a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Wheaton had a 13-4 advantage in shots for the game, while each team had six corners. Freshman Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, PA/Bermudian Springs) made two saves for the Engineers. Wheaton returns to action with a road contest at non-conference foe Roger Williams University on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. SCORING: 1st 2nd Final 2nd Half: WC- Adam Sussman (Cameron Habib) 56:19, Dan Chong (unassisted) 69:17 Goalie Saves: WC- David Croft 3; MIT- Tom Caldwell 2 Shots: WC- 13; MIT- 4 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
