Lane doubles up Keene State and lifts Lyons in double-overtime thrillerSeptember 9, 2006 KEENE, NH- Sophomore Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) turned in a two-goal performance Saturday afternoon, and the Wheaton College men's soccer team downed host Keene State College, 2-1 in double overtime at the Owl Athletic Complex in a battle of nationally-ranked teams. Avenging last year's 4-1 setback to Keene in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the Lyons improved to 4-0 for the first time in two seasons. Wheaton entered today's tilt ranked 10th nationally and second regionally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), while the Owls are 17th in the country and third in New England. Keene suffered its first loss in four games this afternoon. Lane, who registered his second game-winning goal of the season and seventh of his career, ended today's contest after nearly 65 minutes of scoreless action. Junior Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day School) was credited with the assist on the play. Both teams scored in the opening half, with Keene State junior Jeremy Kelsey (Gilford, NH/Gilford) providing the Owls with a 1-0 edge thanks to a header off a cross from sophomore Noah Hertzler (Hancock, NH/ConVal Regional) at 34:19. Five minutes later, Lane got to a loose ball following a cross from freshman Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) and knocked his shot past Owl junior keeper Cal Mintz (Westport, CT/Staples). Wheaton senior goalkeeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season following his six-save performance, while Mintz finished with five saves. Pachniuk now stands alone in second in the Wheaton annals for most career wins with 48. The Lyons outshot the Owls, 15-11 with a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
