Durao's career day boosts Wheaton men's soccer in 5-0 victorySeptember 3, 2006 NORTON, MA- Senior back Dennis Durao (West Hartford, CT/Northwest Catholic) tied a school record with three assists and finished with five points to help the Wheaton College men's soccer team notch a 5-0 non-league victory over Fontbonne University (MO) on Sunday at Keefe Field. The Lyons improved to 2-0, while the Griffins fell to 0-2 in completing their two-game New England road swing. Durao entered the contest with four career points, all assists, in 62 career games before playing a hand in four goals today. He tied a school record with his trio of helpers, a feat recorded on five previous occasions, last on October 2, 2002. Durao later converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute for his first collegiate tally to give Wheaton its final marker. Sophomore Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) scored the first two goals of the game for the Lyons, with Durao assisting on the first just 6:06 into the contest. Durao sent a restart across the box to Lane, who knocked the ball off the left post and in. During the 38th minute, junior Colin Igoe's (Weston, MA/Weston) initial shot from out front was blocked, but Lane picked up the loose ball and buried it into the left side. Wheaton nearly scored in the 16th minute, but junior Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day School) was denied as Fontbonne sophomore keeper D.J. Kaiping (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) dove to his left and made a fingertip save with his left hand. Just 42 seconds into the second half, Durao sent a ball from the right sideline just inside the midfield line out to the left side of the box, where senior Ariel Tatum (Cayman Islands, BWI/Holderness School) connected with a header for Wheaton's third goal. Durao played a hand in sophomore Justin Hart's (Ashland, MA/Ashland) goal at 68:48 before depositing his penalty kick at 71:20. The Lyons held a commanding 21-5 advantage in shots. Senior Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) made three saves in 78 minutes of action before classmate David Croft (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) completed Wheaton's first shutout of the season. Kaiping turned away five shots, while freshman Zach Jaeger (Saint Louis, MO/Saint Mary's) went untested in nearly 20 minutes of relief.
