Shea garners first NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week honorNovember 7, 2005
The freshman forward recorded the first two-goal contest of his young career during the Lyons' NEWMAC Tournament title game victory on Sunday over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He tallied his first goal during the 49th minute, which went as Shea's first collegiate game-winning marker. During the 72nd minute, Shea found the net again and padded Wheaton's lead. In the Blue and White's fifth championship game appearance, Shea became just the second Lyon to record multiple goals during a title match. Shea has appeared in all 19 games this fall, making six starts up top during the last nine contests. He's second on the team with four goals and 10 points, and the first-year player has notched three goals and seven points on just five shots during the past four matches. Both of Shea's assists have contributed to go-ahead tallies, with one holding up as a game-winner. As a team, the Lyons went 2-0 last week, knocking off Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), 2-1 in a NEWMAC Tournament semifinal before corralling their fifth conference title in eight seasons with a 3-0 win over MIT in the championship game. The Lyons also qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third straight season, and the fifth time in six years. With the wins, Wheaton improved to 13-4-2 overall while remaining unbeaten in eight games. The Lyons pace the league with 10 shutouts and a 0.62 goals against average and have the second-best scoring offense at 1.75 goals per game. Shea leads Wheaton into Saturday's NCAA first round match against Keene State College, which Williams College will host at 1:30 p.m. With a win, the Lyons advance to Sunday's second round game, which will also occur at Williams at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
