Lane lands second NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week honor

October 24, 2005

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer standout Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, October 23. The honor was Lane's second Player-of-the-Week nod this fall.

The freshman forward was instrumental in the Lyons' 2-0-1 week, as he scored two of Wheaton's four goals. During a 1-0 win Wednesday against regionally-ranked Roger Williams University, Lane tallied the game's lone marker in the 53rd minute for his 10th goal of the season, a school record for freshmen. Against Babson College on Saturday, his 37th-minute score helped Wheaton to a 1-0 lead during a game it eventually won, 2-1.

Wheaton's offensive leader with 11 goals and 25 points, Lane is one point shy of matching the program's record for freshmen. Lane's season goal total ties him for 10th in program history, and he has scored six go-ahead goals this season - five of which went for game-winners - while contributing assists on a pair of go-ahead markers. Lane has recorded a point in 11 of 15 games this season. Among NEWMAC freshmen, Lane is first in goals and points and tied for the top spot with three assists.

As a team, Wheaton moved into a first-place tie in the NEWMAC with a 4-0-1 conference mark while improving to 10-4-2 overall, marking its 14th consecutive 10-win season. The Lyons have posted eight shutouts, tied for the most among conference members, and have the second-best scoring defense at 0.67 goals allowed per game. Offensively, the Blue and White are fourth with 1.58 markers per contest.

Lane leads Wheaton into Saturday's regular season finale with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Keefe Field, which begins at 1:00 p.m. With a win, the Lyons can guarantee themselves at least a share of the regular season conference title.
