Antoniuk signed by A-League's Portland Timbers

April 2, 2003

PORTLAND, OR- Head coach Bobby Howe announced the signing of former Wheaton College men's soccer standout Dan Antoniuk '03 (Philadelphia, PA/Central) to A-League soccer's Portland Timbers effective immediately. Following a series of invitation-only tryouts conducted by the club, Antoniuk was one of three players signed to the team.

Antoniuk is now the fourth player in the 14-year history of the Wheaton men's soccer program to play professionally. Oscar Medina '97 and Jim Maganello '99 were both drafted out of college, Medina by the A-League Worcester Wildfire in 1997 and Maganello by Major League Soccer's (MLS) New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1999. Jeremy Long '99 also played professionally, logging time with the USISL's Cape Cod Crusaders.

Antoniuk left Wheaton as the all-time record holder in every major statistical category, including career totals of 54 goals, 36 assists and 144 points. He also holds the school marks for goals (18), assists (13) and points (49) in a season, all of which were set in 2000.

A three-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference selection and 2000 NEWMAC Player of the Year, Antoniuk was a third-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America in 2000, a first-team NSCAA All-New England choice in 2002 and a second-team All-New England selection in 1999 and 2000.

In his senior season, Antoniuk netted 12 goals and 11 assists for 35 points in 15 games before his season was cut short due to injury. Playing from 1998 through 2000 in addition to 2002, Antoniuk participated on three postseason teams (NCAA once, ECAC twice), including the 1998 team that captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship. In his four seasons, Wheaton won two NEWMAC regular season titles and a pair of conference tournament crowns, culminating to an impressive 62-18-3 (.765) record.

The Timbers, who were 13-12-3 last season, begin their 2003 home campaign on Thursday, May 1 versus the Seattle Sounders. On Friday, May 2, Portland then travels to Seattle, Washington for its first road game of the year, also against the Sounders. Both the May 1 and 2 matches with the Seattle serve as qualifiers for this year's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
