New England Revolution invites Wheaton's Cavanaugh to try-out for local playersFebruary 5, 2003 NORTON, MA- Major League Soccer's (MLS) New England Revolution has invited Wheaton College men's soccer senior Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown) to a try-out for local players on Thursday, February 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol, along with Assistant Coaches Matt Driver and John Murphy and Director of Soccer Renato Capobianco will be present to evaluate players. Players who are selected to attend the event will have the opportunity to be evaluated by personnel from the 2002 MLS Eastern Conference Champions. At Wheaton, Cavanaugh was selected to the 2002 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas NCAA Division III All-America second team and the Verizon Academic College Division All-District I second team. This marks the second consecutive season that Cavanaugh was tabbed an All-America, as he was named to the first team a year ago. In addition to second-team All-America honors, Cavanaugh was named a first-team All-New England selection for the third straight year. A fourth-team All-New England choice in 2000 and a first-team pick in 2001, Cavanaugh was a three-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic (NEWMAC) All-League selection and two-time NEWMAC Player of the Year. This season, Cavanaugh recorded 21 points (9g, 3a) in his final year with the Blue and White. For his career, Cavanaugh is ranked in the top five in all major statistical categories, including tied for second in goals (35), third in points (92) and fifth in assists (22). As a player from 1999-2002, Cavanaugh was a member of three postseason squads (NCAA twice, ECAC once), including the 2001 team that won the NCAA New England Regional Championship. In his four seasons, the Lyons have captured two NEWMAC regular season crowns and a pair of tournament titles, culminating to a 65-16-2 (.795) record. Last updated on 2/5/03. |
