Wheaton women's track ties for seventh at ECAC D-III ChampionshipMay 19, 2006 SPRINGFIELD, MA- Wheaton College women's outdoor track and field tied for seventh out of 47 teams with 28 points as the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship wrapped up on Friday at Springfield College's Blake Track. The Lyons did not score during the men's portion of the meet, which was won by Williams College with 81 points. Oneonta State College's women took first with 67 points, as Wheaton tied for second among New England entrants. Freshman Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) continued her standout debut season with an NCAA Division III Championship provisional time of 25.23 during a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash. In the 100-meter dash, Ezeigwe ran 12.8 during the preliminary round, coming within 0.1 seconds of the last finals qualifier. Ezeigwe also ran for a pair of relay foursomes, including the victorious 4x400-meter relay team that included fellow first-year athletes Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton). The quartet won in 3:54.57, which was 2.31 ticks ahead of the second-place team. During the 4x100-meter relay, Ezeigwe, junior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater), and freshmen Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) and Samira Sanders (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) combined on a seventh-place showing in 49.72. Calderwood came in sixth during the 800-meter run in a time of 2:17.54, while Harlow and Jamiel each qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. In the finals, Harlow turned in a time of 15.2, which was good for sixth place and a personal best. During the 5,000-meter run, senior Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) came in seventh in 18:09.42. On the men's side, senior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) nearly helped the Lyons score in a pair of events. During the 400-meter dash, Sisodia's 10th-place showing of 49.61 was just 0.13 seconds out of the final scoring position, and he finished fourth among New England competitors. Sisodia also teamed with freshmen Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington), Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) for the 4x100-meter relay, which the quartet finished in 43.58, just 0.5 behind the final scoring foursome. Harlow has already automatically qualified in the high jump for next weekend's NCAA Division III Championship, and additional Lyons will await word on whether they have also qualified. The national meet is being hosted from Thursday through Saturday by Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 5/19/06. |
