Lyon teams combine for eight event titles at MIT's Coed Track Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams combined for eight event championships at Saturday's non-scoring Coed Invitational held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Freshman Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) led the way with multiple-event wins in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles.

Cunha's time of 54.63 in the 400-yard hurdles was 0.03 seconds faster than his school-record mark set last weekend and 0.63 seconds shy of an NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying mark. Cunha posted a time of 15.04 in the 110M hurdles, 0.25 seconds faster than the closest competitor. In addition to Cunha's event wins, the women's team captured an impressive six victories, including five individual events and one relay finish.

Senior Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) won the 1,500-meter run, junior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) captured the high jump, sophomore Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) earned the top mark in the 5,000M run, and freshmen Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) were victorious in the 800-meter run and 400M dash events, respectively.

Calderwood and Jules also ran a leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay, joining first-year athletes Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln). The women had a handful of runner-up finishes during the meet, including Harlow in the 100-meter hurdles, junior Katelyn Teixeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) in the javelin, sophomores Cassandra Migani (Brooklyn, CT/Norwich Free Academy) and Joell Whitley (Magnolia, NJ/Triton Regional) in the discus and long jump, respectively, and freshmen Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Samira Sanders (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) in 5,000M run and 100-meter dash, respectively.

For the men, Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay team comprised of Cunha, seniors Ryan English (New Hartford, CT/Northwestern Regional) and Ross Kahill (South Portland, ME/South Portland), and first-year athlete Albi Skenderi (Glendale, NY/Grover Cleveland) placed third overall. Freshman Kyle Greenidge (Dorchester, MA/Newton North) had the third-best long jump in the meet, senior Eric Richardson (Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run, Wright was sixth in the 400-meter dash and first-year Evan Bell (Newport, ME/Nokomis Regional) secured a sixth-place standing in the hammer throw.

The Lyons return to MIT next Saturday for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, where the women look to defend their eight straight conference titles and the men aim to better their fifth-place showing from a year ago. Wheaton will also send a handful of athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays beginning this Thursday.
