Track and field squads compete against region's best at All New Englands

May 10, 2008

DURHAM, NH- The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams continued to prepare for the NCAA Championship, as Lyon athletes competed in 11 events over the weekend at the All New England Championship, which came to an end on Saturday at the University of New Hampshire's Atkins Track.

At the event, which was attended by regional squads from all three NCAA divisions, the Blue and White women were 20th out of 32 scoring teams, tallying 11 points, as Boston College won the meet with 131 points. Wheaton's men tied for 37th with one point, with the University of Rhode Island pacing the 38-squad field at 122 points.

Junior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) had Wheaton's top showing, placing second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.55, as she eclipsed an automatic standard for the NCAA meet by 0.02 ticks. The Lyon 4x400M relay team also scored, provisionally qualifying for the national championship by placing sixth in 3:54.01. The quartet, which was comprised of Ezeigwe, classmates Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) and sophomore Kelly Libert (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse), was second among Division III teams.

During the 100-meter dash, freshman Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) was 10th in the preliminary round as the second Division III runner to cross the finish line. Senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) was 1.14 seconds shy of NCAA provisional qualification in the 1,500M and 1.37 ticks short of a six-year-old school record at 4:41.14.

For the Lyon men, sophomore Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) turned in a fourth-place showing in the 400-meter dash trials before scoring for Wheaton during the final round, placing eighth.

The Blue and White squads return to action next week at the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship, beginning on Thursday at Springfield College, before qualifying athletes will compete the following weekend at the three-day national championship at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh.
