Powell named USTFCCCA New England Men's Track Athlete of the YearMay 22, 2007
Powell earned the region's top honor after taking second in the 110-meter hurdles event during each the All New England and Division III New England championship meets. His time of 14.59 at the Division III competition on May 5 at Springfield College not only met an NCAA national meet provisional qualification time but also bested a school record by 0.17 seconds. Entering this weekend's national championship at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh ranked seventh in Division III and first among freshmen in the 110M hurdles, Powell hopes to become the first Wheaton male to garner All-America honors in a hurdles event. If successful, Powell would be the school's first outdoor men's track and field athlete to earn All-America laurels since 2004. In addition to Powell's performances at the New England championship meets, he placed in the top two in the 110M hurdles during five other meets during the outdoor season, including earning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference accolades by virtue of winning the April 28 event at the United States Coast Guard Academy. In addition to winning the 110-meter hurdles during the conference championship, Powell also finished first in back-to-back meets on April 7 and 14 at Division II schools Bryant University and University of Massachusetts at Lowell, respectively. He placed second at the Coed Invitational on April 21 and the Last Chance Qualifier on May 18, both hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The lone male athlete to represent Wheaton this weekend in Wisconsin, Powell is slated to compete in the 110-meter hurdles trials at Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Friday at 4:40 p.m. Should he advance to the finals, that event will take place on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
