April 28, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's outdoor track and field standout Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) garnered Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Track Co-Athlete-of-the-Week accolades for the week ending on Sunday, April 23. Cunha shared the award with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) junior Kemar Brown.

The first-year athlete won a pair of events and broke a school record for the second straight weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Coed Invitational last Saturday. Cunha eclipsed the 400-meter hurdles record he set on Saturday, April 15 by 0.03 seconds with a 54.63 finish, bettering a pair of Division I athletes and five from Division II.

During the 110-meter hurdles, Cunha completed the event 0.25 seconds faster than the second-place competitor with a time of 15.04. In that race, he finished ahead of five Division I runners. Cunha set the Wheaton standard in the 110M hurdles on April 15 with a time of 14.76.

Cunha and the Lyon teams return to MIT this coming weekend for their annual New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships. The men's meet is slated for a 10:00 a.m. start while the women are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
