Lyons return to competition with five event championships at Bryant Invitational, women finish second and men sixthApril 9, 2005 SMITHFIELD, RI- The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams returned to competition Saturday at the Bryant University Invitational, as the Lyons boasted a total of five event championships on the afternoon. The women captured runner-up honors with 109 points, while the men placed sixth overall with 41 points in the 18-team field. Freshman Julie McLane (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) was Wheaton's lone double winner, taking event titles in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. McLane edged sophomore teammate Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) in the 100M race in 15.87 and then won the 400M event by nearly four seconds with a time of 1:06.93. Senior captains Jessica Allegra (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) and Kathrine Wallace (Glenmoore, PA/The Hill School) were the other two event winners on the women's side, capturing first place in the 400-meter dash and high jump, respectively. Allegra nipped first-year Chelsea Nader (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) in 59.19, while Wallace posted a NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying standard of 5' 6". Also faring well in the high jump was sophomore Crystal Blamy (Walpole, NH/Fall Mountain Regional) and Harlow, with Blamy taking second at 5' 4" and Harlow third with a clearance of 5' 2". Other top five finishes in the meet came from Harlow in the 100-meter dash, Allegra in the 200M dash, senior Marcie Howard (Ascutney, VT/Windsor) in the pole vault and freshmen Cassandra Migani (Brooklyn, CT/Norwich Free Academy) and Christy Bell (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) in the discus and javelin throws, respectively. Junior captain Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) paved the way for the men with the top finish of 21.96 in the 200-meter dash and third-place standing in the 400M event in 49.23. First-year Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) and junior Eric Richardson (Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) took second and fifth, respectively in the 5,000-meter run, while senior captain Jamaal Rawls-Payton (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) posted a fourth-place standing in the 110-meter hurdles event. In the field, senior Chris Wilbur (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) provided the Lyons with key points in the javelin throw. Wilbur placed second in the event with a distance of 177'. The Wheaton teams return to action next Saturday at the Brown Springtime Invitational held at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Last updated on 4/10/05. |
